The liquid-propellant rocket engines developed and designed by Xi'an Aerospace Propulsion Institute fall into two categories: earth storable rocket engines and cryogenic rocket engines.
The earth storable rocket engines mainly include the first, second stage engines, the booster engines, altitude engines, throttleable space engines, and divert and attitude control thrusters for the Long March launch vehicle family.
The Long March is China's only launch system family for launches of satellites at present. Its 1st, 2nd stage engines and the booster engines are developed and designed by Xi'an Aerospace Propulsion Institute. The engines developed for the Long March series have taken part in all the launch missions of China, and have achieved great accomplishments. They successfully launched all kinds of satellites, Shenzhou spacecraft series and "Tiangong" target spacecrafts into their orbits. With years of development, the conventional rocket engines have been improved significantly in performance, reliability, cost, and maintainability. With constantly improved design and manufacture technologies, the engines developed by Xi'an Aerospace Propulsion Institute have been praised as “golden engines”.
The throttleable space engine is applied to the probes and landers in the lunar exploration program, providing power to lunar probes for orbit transfer and lunar ascent propulsion, with a multi-startup and deep throttling capability.
Furthermore, Xi'an Aerospace Propulsion Institute has successfully developed more than fifty types of divert and attitude control engines, which belong to four series and have been widely used in propulsion systems of various spacecrafts for precise divert and attitude control.

The cryogenic engines mainly include the LOX/kerosene engines for China's new generation heavy launch vehicle. It is the primary power of manned lunar landing, manned space station, and deep space exploration mission of China, and featuring environment friendly, reusable, high performance and high reliability. The development of LOX/kerosene rocket engines has greatly improved the capability of China's launch vehicles, and promoted the technology to the leading level in the world, laying a solid foundation for China to become a space power from a spacefaring nation.
During the development of the new generation LOX/kerosene rocket engines, Xi'an Aerospace Propulsion Institute has surmounted more than 80 items of key technological difficulties, such as those about the engine self-start, high-powered rotating machinery, dynamic and static sealing at high temperatures and pressures, etc., and leading to development of nearly 50 new materials. These new technologies and materials have been widely used in other industries and fields, and greatly expedited and upgraded the technological level of the basic industry.
